It was a financial and intentional decision on EA's part to just cut features and sell us a "Minimum Viable Product" MVP The problem I have with this is that EA was well aware of what the possibilities were because THQ had demonstrably shown the way. UFC 4's Career mode is very one dimensional in comparison to the THQ offerings. You could hold belts in all three, WFA, UFC, and Pride. You could "actually watch tape" in THQ's UFC Undisputed You could watch the matches that were going on in your weight division or any other division regardless to whether you were in WFA, UFC or Pride.
In the THQ games you signed up for actual gyms, and trained with real fighters from those gyms. Which by any objective account is less of a UFC game than THQ's original UFC 2009 One has only to compare the quality of the Career Mode in UFC 2009 with the menu driven social media approach taken in UFC 4. Instead of EA building upon THQ's feature set, EA stripped the game down to is bare essentials, raised the price put out their version of UFC and begin their march to UFC 4. Several Different Stamina and Energy Modelling ModesĮA Sports was painfully aware of this feature set because this is what shut 'EA's own MMA' title down.Īnd besides with the millions of dollars EA is paying their Chief Marketing Officer if he didn't know he could have bought a copy of THQ's UFC to see what the competition was, checked out the many sites dedicated the THQ's Undisputed 3. So EA knew back in 2010 what UFC gamers wanted both because of the success of the THQ games THQ came out swinging:Īnd because the community rejected EA's feature poor and presentation poor MMA offering.Īt the time EA took over from THQ The UFC games featured:Ĭareer Mode with real Gyms, watchable WFA and UFC fights EA's MMA game did not do well with its bland presentation and anemic feature set. Although it was argued that EA's MMA had better graphics than the THQ games.
It lacked many of the features the THQ games had. For those who don't know EA tried to compete with THQ with their ownĪnd EA's MMA didn't measure up.

When EA got the license from THQ they were very aware of the feature set of THQ's UFC 2009, UFC 2010, and UFC UNdisputed 3. We know this because EA can afford to pay their executive millions of dollars each year in salaries: EA had access to star quality developers and a AAA budget. The fact of the matter is EA had the talent and the resources to make THQ 's UFC Undisputed 3 the baseline and then improve from there. Yes at this point we'd be better off if some company totally ignored everything EA has done (I mean everything) with the UFC games and pickup where THQ's UFC Undisputed 3 left off. There could be some quite fun mini games involved such as contractual wrangles etc that actually have career impact but as far as the fighting in the octagon part goes I just think they've nailed the basics there. The career mode could stand a lot of improvement I'll agree. Do we really want to start the development cycle again with a new developer after all these years? EA have actually made what is currently the best fighting sim that has ever existed.
